akhal-teke

Language note: "Turkmen is a general cover term which refers to a continuum of numerous dialects which differ in equally numerous ways both phonologically and morphologically. They can be broken into two general groups: the major or central dialects and others on the periphery. The following are generally regard as major: Yomut, Teke, Salir, Sarik, Goklen, Arsari, and Chowdur." (cue/www=http://www.lmp.ucla.edu/profiles/proft05.htm) Since "teke" matched, I used it as the language of origin.

Al-fuSHa
Modern Standard Arabic (language=Al-fuSHa), translated as "the pure." According to cue/www=http://www.wm.edu/aata/whyarabic.html, "To many Arabs, Modern Standard Arabic, known as Al-fuSHa 'the pure' is the only form of the language which has any worth. The dialects, although they are the universal means of everyday conversation, are regarded by many as degraded forms of the language. This feeling is often reflected in attitudes to foreigners' attempts to learn Arabic: many Arabs, especially if they are educated) feel that only the Standard form of the language should be taught, regardless of the fact that Arabs themselves would never themselves use this kind of Arabic for some of the purposes (e.g. chatting, shopping) for which they insist foreigners should use it. It can sometimes seem an uphill battle for foreigners to get Arabs to talk to them in colloquial Arabic. But don't be put off; the less well educated seem to suffer less from this prejudice, and you may well find that they will be more than willing to help you practice." (Holes, Clive and Nadira Auty and Rachael Harris. 1995. Just Listen 'n Learn Arabic. Lincolnwood: Passport Books, 60-61)

ambulancia aerea

anacol
act of protecting, deliverance, mercy, quarter, safety (language=SeanGhaeilge aka old Irish); could be the source of the American phrase "to cry uncle" as an Ghaeilge (aka Irish) immigrant may have cried for mercy in his native tongue during a playground tussle a couple of generations ago, but his tormentors thought he said "uncle"; "more likely, say ethymologists, some defeated schoolboy was made to curse his uncle —rather than his mother — before he'd be let go. Why this should be so is anyone's guess. Nobody seems to know the true origins of the phrase." [Wacky Questions, Rocky Mountain News, 22 August 1999] [name of language courtesy of cue/www=http://ceantar.org/Web/sean.html]

analco
center line of tlaxtli court (language=Olmec)

anima

Jung reflects archetypal ideals of conduct" as opposed to persona which is "an individual's social facade or front that esp. in the analytic psychology of C. G. Jung reflects the role in life the individual is playing" [Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary; see cue/www=Merriam-Webster OnLine] (language=Latin)

Anu
A mid-bright orange mainsequence/dwarf star that is Yeibichai's primary sun. Orbiting around it are other stars:
En-ki revolves around Anu once every 3.12 Yeibichai days (each day, it goes a third around), so people can actually see it move, that is, if they could look straight at Anu, which they can't unprotected. See more discussion about En-ki's impact on everyday life.
En-lil revolves around Anu once every 18 years or so, a small, reddish wanderer that causes what residents call Red Winter. See more discussion about En-lil's impact on Yeibichai.
The residents of Yeibichai chose these names from the first known — that is, documented — gods, those of Sumeria, who were responsible for cosmic order. These myths are probably most influential on Western civilization through the Semites whose proto-ancestor Abram (aka Abraham of the Torah aka The Bible) came from Ur. The Sumerians also seem to be the earliest people who worked with triads of gods and I needed a threesome here. The Sumerians' great gods were named:
An or Anu, the sky god, god of Uruk
En-lil or Enlil, god of air and storm, god of Nippur
En-ki or Enki, the wise god of the waters, god of Eridu
But also always present was Ninhursag, the ancient Mother Goddess. The triad of lesser gods were named: Utu (Sun), Nanna - Suen (the moon), and Inanna (Venus). Beneath the original Trinity of Creator gods came a secondary heavenly Trinity of Sun, Moon and Venus. First was Nanna, the Moon, god of Ur, who was the son of Enlil. Curiously Utu, the sun god was the child of the moon god, seemingly showing a tendency to regard the more tenuous as the more important, thus Air, Moon, Sun are the first generations of the gods. In the south, the sun might have been seen as a too punishing to have been a primary god. He was honoured mainly as a god of justice. Utu was also called Babbar and his temple was E-Babbara, the House of the Sun, perhaps the origin of the word Babylon. Last was Inanna, the Sumerian, Venus, goddess of love and fertility, plainly an identity of the displaced Great Mother.

anshin
"peace of mind", "tranquility" (language=Kyotsu-go); on Yeibichai, this word describes a set of services, provided under contract to a direvnya, that includes law enforcement, disaster prevention and relief, and health maintenance. Variations attuned to the original Kyotsu-go are allowed; for example, Weir chose to label his services anshinkan to connote "sense of security" as a more accurate description of the work one can do for another. In addition, goanshin provides a verb form of the word.
