xtomatl
tomato (language=Náhuatl); the plant originated in the Andes Mountains, but wasn't domesticated until the Aztecs cultivated, ate and named the plant tomatl, or xtomatl. Cortés and his explorers founds tomatoes in Aztec markets in the early 16th century and took seed back to Spain. Botanically, the tomato is a fruit or berry belonging to the nightshade family. Legally, the tomato is a vegetable. This was decided in 1893 when an importer contended the tomato was a fruit and wasn't subject to vegetable import duties. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled the tomato would be considered a vegetable when it was served in a soup or with the main course of a meal; and a fruit when eaten out of hand or as dessert.
