Science-Fiction Novels "They" say that novels, not short stories, bring in the money, but "they" overlook the much larger investment of mind and time as well as the much steeper climb toward publication (with Mary Higgins Clark pulling $65M out of the publishers' pot in one fell swoop, there's less for us beginners). Still, some ideas just won't fit into a short story, and some people seem to hatch only those kinds of ideas. I'm still hopeful that I can work in both lengths, which brings us to subject of this page, my novels. After my wife and I finished two mainstream novels and failed in that ascent toward print, her interest in writing faded before that sheer wall of rejection. My need to express myself persevered; like many other writers, I don't seem to be able to stay away from this solitary form of expression. This (hopefully temporary) parting of the ways (oh, we're still married, mostly definitely; we're just not writing together for now) enabled me to delve into my favorite genre, science fiction, which Jeanne is not partial to. Downsized by Corporate America about this time, I decided to mix my first two careers into a valiant attempt to start a third. That idea definitely grew ... into a story larger than even a single novel, even the thick ones they're selling these days (thank goodness for that trend). I found myself in the midst of a trilogy that I named Midway for Combines, which I explain over on that page. Volume 1, Seeds of Disaster, is now ready for market. Give it a try! |
